Dr. Beverly Roder received her early training as an R.N. with a specialty in pediatrics.  After several years working in the nursing field, she interrupted her career to become a full-time mom.  She subsequently returned to school to study psychology, eventually earning a B.A. from Framingham State College followed by M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Experimental Psychology from Tufts University.   Her area of specialization was Developmental Psychology.  While she was at Tufts, she was elected to the Scientific Research Society, Sigma Xi.  After graduating in 1986, she joined the faculty of Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts, where she taught courses related to infant and child development, child research, learning, cognition, and experimental psychology.  During her tenure there, she also established and operated the Infant Studies Laboratory.  During her twelve years at FSC, Dr. Roder was the recipient of many grants to support her research in perceptual/cognitive development, and in her final year, she was named Faculty of the Year for excellence in teaching.  Her work has been presented at national and international professional conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals and texts.  In addition, she served for a number of years as an invited reviewer for Child Development.  Her professional affiliations include the Association for Psychological Science, the International Society on Infant Studies, and the Society for Research in Child Development.  In addition to her research interests, Dr. Roder has credentials as a devoted grandmother, an indefatigable perennial gardener, and a dabbler in the arts. Dr. Mabel Lum Sgan received a B.A. and M.A. in Psychology from the University of Hawaii and two PhD's from Cornell University, one in Developmental Psychology, the other in the form of a husband.  Following a postdoctoral research fellowship at Brandeis University, she taught at Wellesley College and Boston University.  After a stint as a full-time mom, she joined the faculty of Fitchburg State College where she taught courses in child and adolescent psychology, research methods, personality, and social psychology. Dr. Sgan's research on children and adolescents has been published in major peer-reviewed journals, including Child Development, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology,and Journal of Educational Psychology.  She has served as an invited reviewer for Child Development.   Her pro bono work for the Legal Aid Society and Public Defenders in Hawaii has included critical evaluations of research on the reliability of eyewitness testimony, the long-term effects of child abuse, and the validity of personality tests.  She is a member of the Association for Psychological Science, Society for Research in Child Development, and Society for Research in Adolescence. Dr. Sgan and her husband now live in Nu'uanu Valley on the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i.   A longtime New England gardener, she is now developing a relationship with tropical plants, with a special interest in indigenous Hawaiian plants. Drs. Roder and Sgan retired from the faculty of Fitchburg State College where the Roder-Sgan Award in Psychology was established in their honor. Their Most Important Qualification: Both Dr. Roder and Dr. Sgan claim to have raised two semi-well adjusted children and between them they have six perfect grandchildren.
